To compensate for store closings, Borders plans to open up 25 temporary "pop-up" stores for the holiday shopping season called "Borders Express".
Amazon announced a "Kindle on the Web" which allows the first chapter of any Kindle book to be previewed on the web. This "try before you buy" is strategically right before the holiday shopping season and the eReader battle for holiday $s begins.
Publisher's Weekly: "After increasing by “only” 118% in June, e-book sales jumped 150.2% to $40.8M at the 14 publishers that report e-book sales in July. Sales for the 1st 7 mos of the yr were up 191%, to $219.5M. The e-book gains also came in a month where all print trade segments reported a decline in sales."
Best Buy will now be selling the Kindle. Like most retailers, they have realized THE gift for the 2010 season will be eReaders. The 55,000 acres of trees we slaughter every day are more than ready for the trend.
