6M Kindle Fires Sold

Analysts estimate 6 million Kindle Fires were sold in the 4th Qtr of 2011. Amazon lost a small amount of money on each sale, but plan to make up for the loss with increased eBook purchases. The story now becomes the electronic turf battle between Apple's iPad, Barnes & Noble's Nook and the Fire. Note: If you are currently an Amazon author and offer your book at a lower price elsewhere, you will be dropped.

Tablet Computer Demographics

Pew Internet Research shows, "36% of households earning $75,000 or more now owning a tablet, and among individuals with a college education, 31% own tablets" Also, "From mid-December 2011 to early January 2012, the number of Americans owning a tablet computer rose to 19% from 10%, and the growth in e-book readers jumped an identical amount, to 19% from 10%."

Apple is launching iBooks 2 with a free creation app to authors. It is a new multimedia textbook platform. They are suggesting all the educational textbooks created in this format sell for under $15. Because this is a self-publish platform, textbooks will not be reviewed for accuracy and language, which has drawn criticism from educators.

Amazon Lending Library Reaches 75K Titles

Amazon now has over 75,000 titles in their Lending Library. The more people borrow, the smaller the amount given to the authors who participate. At present they have earned $1.70 per borrow. Amazon capped the monthly pool authors share from at $500,000.
