For those of you writing articles for sites such as EZineArticles, Google has changed the search parameters. 12% of sites will be affected by these changes. Google is lowering the ranking of these articles since they felt people were putting out low quality articles for the sole purpose of SEO rankings.
Amazon, which does $34 billion in annual sales a year, is now diversifying into streaming video delivery. This will be in direct competition to Netflix. As a society we are moving away from the printed word on paper. Authors need to consider the electronic formats for their creations to reach the market.
Borders will officially be delisted off the NYSE on March 21st. At present publishers are only delivering stock on a cash basis. Talks with the top 30 creditors will continue on Friday.
College bookstores report over 50% of students are using online sources for their textbooks with rentals or open source textbooks. With 8% currently owning some form of eReader, they estimate 75% of students will go online for their textbooks by 2014. This will lower paper/tree use, cost & carbon footprint. Will textbook authors face the same challanges music faced with Napster?
Now with 40 million eReader devices out in the market, publishers are re-evaluating their eBook lending policies to libraries. Harper-Collins issued a limit on the number of times an eBook license can be used by a library. An unlimited license to libraries could substantially reduce profits on eBooks and ultimately to the authors.
